Frequently asked questions

Who can apply be a mentor?

AIRAH members with the designation of M.AIRAH, AM.AIRAH, F.AIRAH, or L.AIRAH that have been an AIRAH member for five or more years are invited to apply to be a mentor.

Who can apply be a mentee?

Fee-paying AIRAH members of any designation may apply. Free Stud.AIRAH members are not eligible for this program.

How long does the program run for?

Once a mentee has applied and selected their preference of mentor(s), AIRAH will confirm the agreement and issue a 12-month contact to both parties for signing.

How often should I meet my mentor/mentee?

AIRAH's 12-month Mentorship Program requires a minimum commitment of four meetings for the duration of one hour. It is recommended to meet monthly for one hour to maximise the mentoring potential, but this will need to be agreed between the mentor and mentee based on willingness and availability.

How will I be matched to me mentor/mentee?

Mentor profiles will be listed on the AIRAH website. Interested mentees will log in to their AIRAH account to view mentors and submit their application form, listing preferred matches. By allocating first, second, and third preferences, AIRAH's program coordinator will be able to best suit the mentees with available choices. Once confirmed, mentors and mentees will be introduced over an email with a 12-month agreement to be signed and returned to AIRAH.

How do we agree on the first meeting and what will be discussed?

Upon matching with a mentor/mentee and signing the 12-month contract, it is expected that the mentor initiates the first meeting. During that meeting, you will need to discuss the method and frequency of meetings moving forward. The mentee should be prepared for the first meeting with some goals to be discussed.

What is the best way to meet my mentor/mentee?

This depends on what best suits you and your mentor/mentee. It could be face-to-face if you are from the same state/territory, over the phone, or a virtual meeting.

What do mentors need to prepare?

The mentor’s primary role is to provide guidance and support to their mentee based on the mentee's unique goals and developmental needs. More information on the mentor role is available on this page.

What do mentees need to prepare?

Mentees must assume responsibility for acquiring or improving skills and knowledge. More information on mentee requirements and responsibilities is available at the beginning of this page. AIRAH has also prepared these resources to assist you in your success in the program, including documents on first meeting prep, goal setting, and preparing a meeting agenda.

What if one or both of us want to end the program before 12 months?

The mentor or mentee may dissolve the relationship within the 12-month period by providing notice in writing to [email protected].

Please note: The mentor and mentee have the responsibility to discuss the matter together as part of their mutual learning. As they have made a commitment to complete the 12-month program in good faith, both parties need to realise that this action should be a last step.

What if either of us want to extend the program after 12 months?

If the mentor and mentee agree to continue the program past the 12-month agreement, that is fine, and no further contracts will need to be signed and submitted to AIRAH. To avoid creating dependency, you will both share the responsibility for the smooth winding down of the relationship when it has achieved its purpose.

What support does AIRAH offer?

AIRAH has defined a Code of Conduct and Confidentiality that each mentor and mentee agrees to when signing up for the program. We have provided a number of resources and will oversee the program with record keeping of contract agreements. We will also liaise with mentors and mentees for matching suitability and, if necessary, for assistance in the early termination of the contract. The [email protected] inbox will be monitored for support and service to participants.

Do I get CPD points for being involved in the program?

Each one-hour mentorship meeting can be logged in your AIRAH account to earn a CPD point for leadership positions and professional participation activities.

Throughout your working life, undertaking continuing professional development (CPD) is an important way to expand your knowledge, maintain up-to-date technical skills, and progress your HVAC&R building services career. The AIRAH Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct recommends all AIRAH members undertake CPD and we encourage members to undertake 150 hours of CPD over three years, at a minimum of 50 hours each year.
