Mentorship Program

For mentors

As a mentor, your primary role is to provide guidance and support to your mentee based on their unique goals and developmental needs. This means you may share with your mentee information about your own career path, as well as provide guidance, motivation, emotional support, and role modelling.

You may help with exploring careers, setting goals, developing networking contacts, and identifying resources that may assist your mentee. The knowledge, advice, and resources you share will depend on the goals of a specific mentoring relationship. You may also choose to introduce your mentee to another mentor within the program if you believe they will be able to add value to your mentee in a specific area.

Benefits of mentoring

There are many benefits of mentoring, including:

  • Cementing your role as a subject matter expert and leader
  • Feeling satisfaction in enhancing skills in helping someone else to develop professionally
  • Gaining fresh perspectives and access to diverse thinking
  • Staying in touch with emerging issues relevant to industry
  • Giving back to the industry
  • Earning continuing professional development (CPD) hours for meeting with your mentee

Throughout your working life, undertaking CPD is an important way to expand your knowledge, maintain up-to-date technical skills, and progress your HVAC&R building services career. Each one-hour meeting enables the mentee to log one hour of CPD under the "leadership positions and professional participation activities" – one of the seven major types of CPD activities AIRAH recognises.

By participating as a mentor, you'll also be contributing to broader improvements for the HVAC&R industry by:

  • Fostering greater communication and collaboration
  • Sharing and leveraging strategic knowledge and skills throughout the sector
  • Promoting the opportunities and benefits of working in HVAC&R
  • Investing in the future of the industry
