AIRAH, with expert input from the Refrigeration Special Technical Group, has been working with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) and other industry bodies to understand the stubborn presence of R404A in commercial refrigeration applications in Australia, and discuss measures to reduce our reliance on this high-GWP refrigerant.

In February 2024, AIRAH provided feedback on a discussion paper developed by DCCEEW. We emphasised the need for urgent action in the form of bans and GWP limits, and also education and incentives for end-users.

AIRAH continues to work closely with government and other industry stakeholders to support Australia’s transition away from ozone depleting and high-GWP refrigerants to more sustainable alternatives.
