APER
AIRAH Professional Engineer Register
BSR
Registered Professional Engineer of Western Australia
What is BSR?
Registration as a Registered Professional Engineer of Western Australia
(BSR) is a formal recognition of the qualification and competency of an
engineer in the state of Western Australia.
The Building services (Registration ) Act 2011 was amended to include
professional engineer registration commencing July 2024 and expands to
include Mechanical Engineers from July 1, 2025.
How do I get BSR assessment?
The Western Australian Engineers Registration Scheme is a regulatory model
where assessment is undertaken by a professional engineering body prior to
the engineer registering with the Western Australian Government as a
Professional Engineer.
AIRAH is an approved assessment entity for the Western Australian Government
to undertake assessments for mechanical engineers seeking to become a
Registered Professional Engineer of Western Australia (BSR).
More information on the Western Australia (BSR) scheme can be found at

What is the difference between BSR and APER?
The Registered Professional Engineer of Western Australia (BSR) and the
AIRAH Professional Engineer Register (APER) are different.
Western Australia (BSR) registration is awarded by the Western Auatralian
government. To achieve registration, you need to have your qualification and
competency assessed by an approved assessment entity such as AIRAH.
APER is the professional accreditation for engineers operating in the
HVAC&R building services industry. It is administered by AIRAH and has
been designed to meet the requirements of the BSR and other state-based
schemes as they are released.
The APER is open to both AIRAH members and non-members.
AIRAH members on the register may carry the post-nominal of AIRAH Registered
Professional Engineer (ARPEng).
The assessment eligibility requirements are the same for APER and BSR,
however ongoing registration may require compliance with the BSR CPD
requirements.
Please read the
Western Australia guidelines
for more information on the accreditation program.
