James Harrison Day
AIRAH celebrates James Harrison Day annually on April 17, marking the anniversary of Harrison’s birthday and honouring his contributions to Australian HVAC&R.
A cheers to James Harrison in 2021
In 2021, AIRAH staff had the opportunity to visit Geelong Design Week’s James Harrison exhibition. It included a tasting of “Harrison’s Rocky Point” – a dark lager from Southern Bay Brewery.
“This dark lager is named after the father of refrigeration and the place where he first produced ice in 1851,” the brewery says. “Its flavours are inspired by the rich malty ales and smokey peated whisky of Scotland where James Harrison was born.”
In celebration of James Harrison’s birthday, we held a contest where one person won a slab of the beer. Congratulations to our winner who has been notified, and thank you to everyone that entered!

Your organisation may also consider scheduling a recognition event to celebrate the achievements of the HVAC&R industry. Suggested events:
- Presentations about the value of HVAC&R (commercially and in everyday use)
- A recognition breakfast, morning tea or lunch to celebrate what your company has achieved
- Coordinated events with other organisations/associations

AIRAH is also a proud supporter of World Refrigeration Day, taking place on June 26. Launched in 2019, this initiative aims to raise awareness around the importance of refrigeration and brings together organisations, companies and practitioners from around the globe.

James Harrison ~ Pioneering Genius
WR (Roy) Lang, 1982
Some said he was talented. Others said he was a genius. One man declared he was an epoch maker. All three were right.
Like the invention of the steam engine, refrigeration is one of the forces that has shaped our civilisation.
