In Australia, the registration of engineers is determined by the states/territories.

Those working on mechanical engineering projects in Victoria are required to be registered by December 1, 2023.

Professional registration is already in place in Victoria for fire safety engineers; civil engineers; structural engineers; and electrical engineers.

This December 1 mandatory registration deadline for mechanical engineers is of importance to those working in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and building services.

When should I apply?

It can be a lengthy process to assess your competency. To meet the deadline, we recommend starting the registration process as soon as possible.

Applications to the AIRAH Professional Engineer Register (APER) should be submitted by October 1, 2023.

Please note: Applications will be accepted after this date, but we cannot guarantee that your accreditation will be confirmed in time for the December 1 deadline.


What is APER?

AIRAH Professional Engineer Register logo The AIRAH Professional Engineer Register (APER) is the professional accreditation for engineers operating in the HVAC&R building services industry. It demonstrates to the public that an engineer is qualified, competent, and ethical.

The APER is open to both AIRAH members and non-members.

How do I register?

The Victorian Engineers Registration Scheme operates as a co-regulatory model. Assessment must be undertaken by an approved assessment entity.

The steps to apply through the APER scheme are:

Step 1 You (the candidate) will complete the online application process. This involves several stages/steps to assess eligibility and experience. For more information on how to apply, please visit this page.
Step 2 AIRAH will verify your qualifications, experience, and competency.
Step 3 Once assessed and deemed eligible, you will apply to the Victorian Business Licencing Authority for registration.
