Sydney's Quay Quarter Tower: A world-first sustainability innovation
Donnelly, Nunn and Saidman will present the project overview, innovations, and challenges of Quay Quarter Tower at Circular Quay in Sydney. For their Outlook 2020 keynote address, they will also offer insight into its technical HVAC and sustainable design challenges.
At concept, this project outlined a high-level sustainability target. Commenced in 2015, Quay Quarter Tower has evolved throughout the design and construction process to enable it to both meet and exceed current industry practices. It is also a world-first, with around two-thirds of the building’s original core retained through the construction process, resulting in a carbon saving of 6.1 million kilograms – equivalent to approximately 35,000 Sydney to Melbourne flights.
Nunn initially trained and worked as an environmental lawyer, before moving into sustainability consulting in the building sector. He has 20 years' experience in sustainability, with expertise in environmental law, sustainability consultancy, green building design and operations, sustainability rating systems, corporate sustainability strategy and reporting. Nunn’s current role as Head of Sustainability at AMP Capital Real Estate involves working with the funds management team to set sustainability – environment, social and governance or ESG – strategies; engaging with key stakeholders within and outside the business to communicate sustainability performance and initiatives; supporting investment and property managers to develop asset-level ESG plans; overseeing energy procurement; representing AMP Capital Real Estate through industry bodies; and overseeing sustainability reporting including quarterly ESG updates to investors for each fund and an annual submission of the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) survey.
Donnelly joined AMP Capital Real Estate in 2017. In his current role, he leads a highly experienced team of development specialists who are focussed on the successful delivery of Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney’s Circular Quay.
Donnelly has 18 years’ experience in mixed use development, leading a variety of major projects through masterplanning, design, planning, procurement, leasing and delivery. He has worked in leading development roles in Sydney, Melbourne and Singapore. Donnelly is passionate about the sustainable development of cities and successfully realising the vision of city-defining precincts
Saidman leads the buildings group in Arup’s Sydney office, with a track record of excellence in design across sectors including commercial office; arts and culture; hospitals; education facilities; and residential and large mixed-use developments. He is passionate about integrating services into the building form and has a strong understanding of multidisciplinary solutions in engineering design, exemplified by proven holistic designs and a focus on effective communication of concepts and ideas.
Saidman has substantial experience embedding best practise sustainability principles into his design solutions using a broad understanding of multidisciplinary design. This includes rating tools such as Green Star, NABERS and WELL. He has successfully used this knowledge in the “green” refurbishment of several existing buildings and in the design of new developments targeting the highest levels of sustainable performance.
