AIRAH Professional Engineer Register (APER) Eligibility

To apply for accreditation on the AIRAH Professional Engineer Register (APER) for Victoria you must provide evidence that you have the required qualifications, knowledge, and professional experience and competence. 

The eligibility requirements for APER Victoria were set to exceed the international standard for engineer registration and are aligned with the requirements of the Business Licensing Authority (BLA) for Professional Engineers registration in Victoria.

To be eligible for AIRAH Professional Engineer Register (APER) Victoria status, you must:

Have completed an acceptable qualification in one of the disciplines of engineering. Acceptable qualifications include:
  • An under-graduate Bachelor of Engineering degree or post-graduate Master of Engineering degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited Australian institution; 
  • A part-time equivalent degree; 
  • A previously recognised historical equivalent qualification; 
  • A qualification gained elsewhere that satisfies the requirements of the Washington Accord for recognition as a Professional Engineer.

Gained five years of engineering experience in mechanical engineering, of which at least four years must be post-graduate experience. For applicants applying for registration as a ‘practising’ professional engineer, the experience must have been gained in the last 10 years.


If applying for assessment with the intention of applying to the Victorian Business Licensing Authority (BLA) to become an endorsed building engineer, demonstrated knowledge and practical application of:
  • Victorian building laws and standards, and
  • The operation and use of the National Construction Code as it applies to mechanical engineering.

Have two other suitable engineers vouch for your work experience.
