Instructions
for authors
Abstracts
Two-page
abstracts
The
deadline for submission of two-page abstracts for assessment by the scientific
committee and peer review is now October 26, 2008.
A list of guidelines is attached below for downloading. Two-page abstracts
should be submitted for oral presentations. Once reviewed, comments from
the referees will be sent to you by e-mail for editing an resubmission
prior to the conference.
The
deadline for the final (reviewed) two-page abstract is March
13, 2009. A book of abstracts will be available at the start
of the conference. Please note that registration is compulsory for at
least the presenting author of submitted final contributions, and that
Abstracts will NOT be edited before publication. The proper styling, spelling
and grammar of your paper is your responsibility. Pay special attention
to clear presentation and readability of graphs, figures and tables.
The
preferred word processor is MS Word 1997-2003 or higher. You can download
a sample abstract in MS Word, which contains and explains all required
styling and formats. The sample document will serve as a document template
that allows you to easily create your abstract.
Alternatively,
you can download a PDF file (readable with Acrobat Reader) that contains
the sample abstract with guidelines. If you use a word processor other
than MS Word, please prepare your abstract according to these guides.

Full
papers
The
full paper will only be accepted at the conference. A set of guidelines
for the full paper are attached below.
The
conference papers will be published no longer then six months after the
conference. The final full paper for oral presentations should not be

Submit
your final paper to the Conference Secretariat, preferably by CD or e-mail
at the conference. If you are sending the final paper via e-mail, attach
your paper in an e-mail and mention 'final paper' in the subject field.
Alternatively, final papers submitted via CD including a hard copy will
be accepted. These can be delivered to the registration desk for the whole
duration of the conference.
Oral
presentation guidelines
The
time allowed for oral presentation is 20 minutes, with an additional 5
minutes for questions afterwards. Strict time schedules will be followed.
All
presentations must be via computer screen presentations. Microsoft PowerPoint
presentations are preferred. An LCD projector and a PC with the latest
version of MS PowerPoint will be available. Authors are requested to bring
their presentation on CD, USB memory stick or send it to the conference
secretariat prior to the conference by e-mail.
Below
are tips for oral presentations (Rupnow et al., Food Technology, 55(1),
46-56):
- be prepared: rehearse your presentation
several times before the conference, but do not use a script at the
time of presentation.
- don't be nervous: convert nervousness
into energy by being prepared, getting comfortable on the stage, concentrating
on the conversation, trying to get personal contact, taking your time
starting the presentation, simply relaxing ...
- be organised: your speech should follow
a logical sequence and focus on the topic and its implications rather
than the fascinating details. The introduction sets the stage for the
rest of the talk, and should be used to convince the audience to stay.
Follow the outline to structure your presentation. Try using rhetorical
questions to keep the audience involved. Reemphasize the main findings
in the conclusions, when people are most attentive.
- prepare for questions: you are the expert,
so don't fear questions. If you don't know the answer directly, you
may be willing to discuss this excellent idea over coffee ...
- speak slowly: keep sentences short, repeat
the main points throughout the presentation, use different words to
explain the same idea, practice.
- be enthusiastic: excitement is contagious!
Concentrate on the main ideas, look at the audience, move to emphasize,
but avoid distracting habits and be careful using humour.
- use good visuals:
- layout: use templates to enhance familiarity,
be consistent so that the audience can learn to read your slides,
less is more and big is beautiful!
- use them as support: visuals guide your
presentation, you do the talking.
- text: use keywords, do not use full
sentences, one idea per slide, use large text sizes, use different
text styles and colours for headings and main text, do not use all
capital letters, use clear bullets, avoid commas and points, proofread!
- colour: keep it visible (e.g., do not
use red on green), differentiate between different elements on your
slide, use a limited number of colours
- graphs and tables: simplify, use essentials
only, use thick lines and numbers, don't use frames, place clear,
short and ordered legends and titles, avoid special effects
