Membership grades

Member and Associate Member Grades are assigned according to a mix of qualifications, experience and job responsibility. Your grading application will need to show the following.

To be a Member, you:

  • Hold a Degree or a recognised equivalent in engineering or physical science and have been actively engaged in HVAC&R for not less than three years, two years of which have been in responsible charge of work, or
  • Hold a certificate or recognised equivalent in engineering or physical science and have been actively engaged in HVAC&R for not less than eight years, three years of which shall have been in responsible charge of work, or
  • Have been in responsible charge of work involving technical decisions in the design, construction or teaching of HVAC&R for a period of five years and have been actively engaged in HVAC&R for not less than twelve years.


To be an Associate Member, you:
  • Hold an approved certificate in engineering or physical science and have been actively engaged in the Industry for not less than four years, or
  • Have been actively engaged in the Industry for a period of not less than eight years, three years of which shall have been in responsible charge of work, or
  • Are in a branch of the Industry in which a relevant apprenticeship has been completed, and after completing this apprenticeship shall have been actively engaged in the Industry for not less than six years.

The AIRAH Code of Ethics provides guidance to members to assist them in carrying out their duties and responsibilities and defines professional conduct standards which AIRAH expects its members to adhere to.


To be a Fellow:

Fellow is the grade of membership conferred on AIRAH members who have made an outstanding, distinctive and exemplary contribution to AIRAH and the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industry and have held the grade of Member for at least 10 years.
